In this blog, we are about to discuss database and database terminologies such as data, data processing, information, database, file processing system, database system, etc.


A database is an organized collection of data. It is the collection of schemas, tables, queries, reports, views, and other objects. People and organizations need different types of data for various purposes. The organizations work together with different other organizations by sharing such data. Data are essential and important to fulfill the requirements of individuals, organizations, offices, companies, etc. in order to achieve the desired goal. Therefore data must be collected from various sources in an organized manner. The collected data is then processed in order to obtain the desired result and store it systematically as databases for further purposes.
Before the development of computer technology, organizations used to keep data and information in the annual database system. The preparation and manipulation process of a manual database is very complex and tedious because they are never updated easily. In the traditional and manual file system, data cannot be shared. The development of the computer system and advancement in software helped to process, manage and update data quite easily and effectively. The data in the computerized system can be processed at a very high speed and a large amount of data can be stored in a small space.

Data is the plural form of the word ‘datum’. It may be any numbers, figures, characters, or symbols. Thus, data are the new facts symbols or unprocessed means which give complete meaning only after processing. Data in itself may or may not give complete sense or meaning. The data can be collected from various sources such as field surveys, questionnaires, authorized agencies, etc.
Examples of data are: Ram, Anil, Butwal, Ten, boy, 12, cricket, football, 16, Hari, Palpa, nine, 12, etc. are some examples of data. Since these data do not give proper meaning so, they need to process and organize systematically.

Data processing

Data processing is defined as the method of converting unprocessed data into meaningful information. It is a process or an action taken on data to get the desired result as per the requirement through a series of a number of steps one after another. Computerized data processing is carried out with the help of Database Management Software.


Information is the outcome of data processing. In other words, the result or desired output of data processing is information. Data becomes information when we understand what it means. The arranged or processed data that gives complete sense or meaning is what we call information.
Example: Ram is 20 years boy who reads in class 12 and he likes football also lives in Butwal 15. Here this sentence is information because it gives proper meaning.

A database is an organized collection of logically related information about a person, thing, or place that can be used for different purposes. It is the systematic arrangement of logically related data and information. The data or information in the database may be in the form of text, numbers, or encoded graphics. A large amount of data are stored, organized, processed, manipulated, and retrieved easily and effectively in the database. Some of the examples of databases are telephone directory, mark ledger, flight schedule, employee’s records, etc.
